My Story

On the banks of a Kansas lake I first heard of Romania. It was a rustic week of camp with a projector aimed at the side of a bus to display pictures and videos. The coordinating stories about Romania from a missionary pierced my heart. Throughout the week of camp I learned more about the people in Romania and how different their lives were than mine. By the end of the week I was determined that one day I would go to Romania. I went home after camp informing my family that one day I was going to Romania. They were a bit surprised, but thankfully didn't try to sway my determination.

It was years later in college when I realized God had a bigger plan than I had even imagined in regards to my "trip" to Romania.  I began to study God's Word and realize how desperately God desires all people to know His great love for them and the truth of salvation through Jesus Christ. I began to see that God's desire for His people is that they would take the gifts God has blessed them with and go bless others.
My heart for full-time missions was growing and I was realizing more and more that Romania might one day become my normal. God began directing even more vividly. At the National Missionary Convention, I ended up meeting the president of Team Expansion who introduced me to a missionary who had been serving in Romania and was praying for teammates. God certainly had my attention.

The summer of 2011 I had the opportunity to go to Romania for almost three months for a vision trip. I got to be a part of a ministry to the Roma people. The Roma people have their own heritage, language, culture and traditions that are very different from the Romanian people. They face discrimination, racism, poverty and low-expectations. Apart from Christ they have little hope. Yet, most of them have never heard of the love and truth of Christ.
So, I'm going back to Romania to join in the effort of blessing the Roma people.
My prayer is that God would use me to communicate His love and truth to the Roma people and bring hope that can only come from Christ into their hearts and lives. I'm so thankful for my ever-present Savior who loves beyond comprehension. May He be glorified in all the earth!

Allyssa, I just found your blog through A LIFE OVERSEAS. Reading it seems like thinking back over last year for me! I spent 5 months near Bucharest (July-November) this past year and am beginning the process of becoming a full time missionary there.
I can identify with so many of your experiences! Haha, even the little things like looking on the outside of the door for the light switches when you come home, getting peed on, language flops, making people in RO think I'm strange because I smile a lot... as well as the frustration of wanting to reach out to someone but knowing that I don't speak enough of the language to communicate what I want to say.
I'd love to connect with you through email and get some advice from you since you're a step ahead of me in the process of relocating permanently to RO! If you're interested and have time, my email is abundantlyblessed17(at)yahoo(dot)com.

Blessings!
